Dismissal of Antonio Palomino as head of INPE

Antonio Palomino was removed from his position as head of the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) for stating that the PCP-SL detainees were political prisoners. This statement generated controversy in the political context of the time. Even Alfonso Barrantes Lingán, mayor of Lima and leader of Izquierda Unida, stated the next day that there were no political prisoners in the country. The dismissal occurred during the government of Alan García Pérez, who had assumed the presidency in July of that year.
