Shining Path Attack on Marks
Shining Path attack on the town of Marcas repelled by peasant patrol, leaving 8 community members and 2 subversives dead.
On August 29, 1985, around 9 p.m., between 30 and 35 members of the Shining Path tried to enter the town of Marcas trying to take advantage of the movement of a flock of sheep to go unnoticed. They were discovered by villagers who were guarding a watchtower in the Pacopata area. The subversives shot down the lookouts and one from the nearby Ayaorcco tower. The alert allowed most of the villagers to gather for the confrontation. The hikers had firearms and explosives, while the villagers had slingshots and bladed weapons. The villagers managed to put the subversives on the run. During the chase they captured two hikers who were lynched. The subversives also captured two villagers: one had his hand cut off and the other had his throat slit. Eight villagers and two subversives were killed.
