Murder of civilians in Pucayacu

On August 4, 1985, military killed and buried in mass graves seven civilians in Pucayacu, Huanta, Ayacucho. On August 22, a grave was discovered with fifty unrecognizable corpses, apparently burned with acid.

On August 4, 1985, the military murdered and buried seven civilians in mass graves in Pucayacu, province of Huanta, Ayacucho. These people had previously been detained in the Municipal Stadium of Huanta, where members of the Navy were stationed. Around August 16, approximately fifty people detained in that place were transferred to the town of Pucayacu. On August 22, the grave was found with fifty unrecognizable corpses, as they had apparently been burned with acid. The Joint Command of the Armed Forces issued a communiqué on August 24 suggesting that the bodies found were those of members of the PCP-SL killed in confrontations, although the discovery caused a commotion in political circles.
