State of emergency in the province of Pasco

On May 10, 1985, a state of emergency was declared in the province of Pasco following the assassination of elected Congressman Luis Alberto Aguilar Cajahuamán by the PCP-SL. This led to the establishment of multiple counter-subversive military bases in the province.

On May 10, 1985, the Belaunde government declared a state of emergency in the province of Pasco. This decision was precipitated by the assassination of Professor Luis Alberto Aguilar Cajahuamán, APRA militant and professor at the Daniel Alcides Carrión National University, who had been elected Deputy in the April 14, 1985 elections and was assassinated by a detachment of the PCP-SL. After the declaration of the state of emergency, the Army established counter-subversive bases in several districts of the province, including Goyllarisquizga, Páucar, Santa Ana de Tusi, Simón Bolívar, Yanahuanca, Michivilca and Chinche Tingo, with the Goyllarisquizga base being the most important. In the weeks following the declaration, dead people with gunshots to the head appeared in the city of Cerro de Pasco, and arbitrary detentions of alleged PCP-SL members became frequent.
