On April 19, 1985, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso carried out an assault against the Civil Guard detachment in Urcos, Quispicanchi province. This attack was part of the first phase of real violence in the Cuzco region, which began with the harassment and attack on rural and urban police posts. The assault on Urcos was one of the first significant attacks against police installations in the department, replicating the pattern of the previous assault in San Sebastian on January 25 of the same year.
