Call for the 1985 General Elections

The Peruvian government formally called the General Elections for April 14, 1985, a date that generated disagreements with the PAP. The elections took place in a context of intense political violence and anti-electoral campaigns by subversive groups.

The government formally called for the 1985 General Elections, establishing April 14 as the date. This decision caused disagreements on the part of the Peruvian Aprista Party (PAP). The elections took place in the midst of the terrorist actions of the PCP-SL and the MRTA, who developed anti-electoral campaigns aimed at party premises and political cadres. The PCP-SL called for a general strike on election day and even mutilated peasants' fingers, while the MRTA illuminated San Pedro hill with the phrase "Do not vote" on April 13.
