Inhabitants of San Juan Baños de Rabí vote in defiance of Shining Path
One hundred inhabitants of San Juan Baños de Rabí defied the PCP-Sendero Luminoso on April 14, 1985, putting a Shining Path group on the run in order to travel to Yanahuanca to vote in the presidential elections.
On Sunday, April 14, 1985, the day of the presidential elections, one hundred villagers from San Juan Baños de Rabí traveled to Yanahuanca to exercise their right to vote. This act represented a demonstration of direct resistance against the subversive incursions of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. The villagers put to flight a group of Shining Path guerrillas who were trying to prevent them from participating in the electoral process. This event exemplifies the different forms of resistance of the rural population against the imposition of the Shining Path, which included boycotting the electoral process.
