In April 1985, a 19-year-old woman was detained by members of the Peruvian Army and taken to the Pampa Cangallo Base in Ayacucho, where she was accused of belonging to the Shining Path. During her detention she was physically tortured with blows to the head and face with firearms and kicks to the body. She was later sexually assaulted by a base commander. In August 1985 she was detained for the second time and taken again to the Pampa Cangallo Base and then transferred to the Huamanga Base. In 1986 she was detained for the third time and taken to the base where she was again sexually abused by the same commander, who forcibly undressed her, tearing her underwear with a knife and with his weapon. The victim reports that she was subjected to constant sexual harassment by the commander, who called her to the base when she left school and raped her repeatedly, mocking her after each rape.
