Detentions and rapes at Pampacangallo Military Base
Between 1985 and 1986, a young woman was detained on three occasions at the Pampa Cangallo Military Base, where she was tortured and repeatedly raped by a commander of the Peruvian Army. The rapes were part of a pattern of systematic sexual harassment.
A 19-year-old woman was arrested in April 1985 by members of the Army and taken to the Pampa Cangallo Base, accused of belonging to the Shining Path. She was physically tortured with blows to the head and face with firearms and kicks to the body, in addition to being sexually assaulted. In August 1985 she was detained for the second time and taken again to the Pampa Cangallo Base and then transferred to the Huamanga Base, where she was again sexually abused. In 1986 she was detained for the third time and taken to the base where she was sexually abused by the same commander, who forcibly undressed her with a knife and firearm. The victim reports that she was a victim of constant sexual harassment by the commander, who called her to the base every time she left school and raped her repeatedly, mocking her.
