In February 1985, a sergeant of the Republican Guard was murdered in Chiaraje, located in the highlands of Canas, department of Cusco. This assassination occurred in the context of the expansion of PCP-Sendero Luminoso violence into the southern Andes. The event occurred shortly after the first assault on a police post in San Sebastian, near the city of Cusco, which had occurred on January 25, 1985, where two policemen were killed. In April of the same year, the Urcos police post was also attacked, evidencing the pattern of attacks against law enforcement in the region.
