On January 25, 1985, the first assault on a police post in the region took place in San Sebastian, near the city of Cusco. This attack marked the beginning of the violent actions of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso against the forces of law and order in the department of Cusco. Two policemen were killed in the assault. This event was followed by other attacks in the region: in February a sergeant of the Republican Guard was killed in Chiaraje, in the highlands of Canas, and in April the police post of Urcos was attacked.
