Retreat and territorial expansion of Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path)

Shining Path withdraws from Ayacucho and expands operations to other regions of the country

Between 1985 and 1987, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso entered a stage of retreat after the violent state repression in Ayacucho and penetration into other social and geographic spaces. It sought to generate support bases and expand its actions in the central, northeastern and southern Andean regions and in the cities. It tried to link up with different sectors such as the cocalero peasants of the Huallaga valley, the peasant communities of Junin, Huancavelica and Apurimac, and intensified political proselytism among radicalized youth sectors in the universities of Lima and Huancayo.
