Creation of the province of Churcampa

In 1985, the province of Churcampa was created in the southern part of Tayacaja, Huancavelica, consisting of ten districts. The north-central districts were the most affected by political violence.

The province of Churcampa was created in 1985 in the southern part of the province of Tayacaja. This new province was linked to both the Mantaro Valley and the province of Huanta. The districts that made up the new province were Churcampa, Anco, Chinchihuasi, El Carmen, La Merced, Locroja, Paucarbamba, San Miguel de Mayocc, San Pedro de Coris and Pachamarca. The districts located in the north-central part of the province (Paucarbamba, Chinchihuasi and Pachamarca), the closest to Tayacaja, were the ones that suffered the greatest attacks by the subversive forces of the PCP-SL and the response of the forces of law and order.
