In 1985, in the district of Huaccaña, province of Parinacochas, the mayor and two villagers were murdered. This event occurred in the context of the intensification of PCP-Sendero Luminoso actions in the southern part of Ayacucho. The district of Huaccaña had been identified as an area with PCP-SL support bases since 1983. The assassinations were part of the Shining Path's strategy to eliminate local authorities accused of collaborating with the forces of law and order.
