On November 24, 1984, a combined police, military and self-defense committee operation, apparently coming from the province of La Mar in Ayacucho, disappeared the community of Lucmahuayco. The villagers were killed and the survivors were taken to the city of Quillabamba to be prosecuted as terrorists. The counter-subversive forces accused the community of being a 'support base' for the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. This operation occurred on the same day as a confrontation with the Vilcabamba police.
