On November 24, 1984, there was a confrontation with the Vilcabamba police. At the same time, that same day, a combined police, military and self-defense committee operation was carried out, apparently coming from the province of La Mar, in the department of Ayacucho, which disappeared the community of Lucmahuayco, assassinating its inhabitants and transferring the survivors to the city of Quillabamba, to be processed as terrorists, accused of being a 'support base' of the PCP-SL. This event occurred in the context of the expansion of violence in the region, when in May 1984 the towns of Villa Virgen and Pomabamba had been taken over by the PCP-SL.
