Statement by Alfonso Barrantes on IU and the Army
Alfonso Barrantes Lingán, IU candidate, declared in El Diario that the United Left and the Army are "two concurrent forces" that work to Peruvianize Peru and watch over national interests, thus countering a journalistic campaign against him.
The presidential candidate of Izquierda Unida (IU), Alfonso Barrantes Lingán, made statements to the newspaper El Diario responding to a journalistic campaign unleashed by some sectors. In his statements, Barrantes affirmed that "the IU and the Army are two concurrent forces, because both work for the Peruvianization of Peru and their mission is to watch over national interests". This statement was made in the context of the 1985 general elections and days after the Minister of War, General EP Julián Juliá Freyre, declared that there was no fear within the Peruvian Army about the possibility of the IU coming to power.
