Murder of 19 CORAH workers
Murder of 19 CORAH workers in November 1984 suspends coca eradication
In November 1984, 19 workers of CORAH (Control and Reduction of Coca Cultivation in Alto Huallaga) were assassinated. This event forced the suspension of coca eradication not only because of the dangers to the lives of CORAH personnel but also because of the problems that forced eradication caused among the population, including abuses, theft, corruption and the inability to generate alternative economic activities. This event facilitated the entry of Shining Path cadres into the region.
