Statement by Luis Bedoya Reyes on Izquierda Unida and Terrorism

Luis Bedoya Reyes declared that Izquierda Unida continued to encourage subversion and justify the crimes of the PCP-SL due to its lack of a clear position against terrorism. These statements were part of the political debate prior to the 1985 elections.

Luis Bedoya Reyes made public statements sharply criticizing Izquierda Unida (IU), claiming that the party continued to encourage subversion and went to great lengths to justify the crimes of the PCP-SL. Bedoya pointed out that in the absence of a clear position by the IU on terrorism, the party continued to promote subversive violence. These statements were made in a tense political context, a few months before the 1985 general elections, and reflected the accusations of conservative sectors against the Peruvian left. Bedoya's criticisms were part of a national debate on political responsibility for the actions of the Shining Path.
