Murder of farmers in Chilcayoc

Members of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso disguised as police officers murdered a group of peasants in Chilcayoc on September 29, 1984, in retaliation for the community's opposition to their actions.

On September 29, 1984, members of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso disguised as police officers assassinated a group of peasants in Chilcayoc. This attack took place in a context of growing community opposition to Shining Path actions. Previously, on August 13 of the same year, another group of Chilcayoc community members on their way to Lima had been murdered in Cochayoc, Belen, by Shining Path members. The murders were part of the PCP-SL's retaliation against the community, which had killed a wounded Shining Path militant and detained other members of the group in early 1984.
