Putis Massacre

117 people massacred in Putis by military, one of the largest mass graves in Peru

117 people - men, women, children - were killed in the community of Putis, presumably at the hands of the military. Most of the villages in the area had been forced by the PCP-SL since 1983 to 'retreat' to the hills. When the Military Base was installed in Putis, a group decided to surrender and went down to the community, but they were forced to dig their own graves and shot. To this day, Putis is home to one of the largest mass graves not only in Ayacucho, but probably in Peru.
