PCP-SL armed column begins operations in Puno

In September 1984, an armed column of the PCP-SL began operations in Puno, carrying out sabotage, dynamite theft and assaults on associative enterprises in the provinces of Puno, Lampa, San Roman and Azángaro.

In September 1984, the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL) began operations with an armed column in the department of Puno. The actions of the PCP-SL in the provinces of Puno, Lampa, San Román and Azángaro were aimed at preparing the conditions for this armed column to begin its operations, by stealing dynamite, dynamiting bridges, knocking down high tension towers, and assaulting some SAIS such as Quenamari in Azángaro. This period marked a significant escalation in the presence and armed activity of the Shining Path in the Puna region.
