Installation of military base in Soras
Military base installed in Soras in September 1984 at the request of villagers harassed by the PCP-SL. The base operated until December 1988, being remembered for abuses committed especially under the command of Captain 'Cobra' since the end of 1986.
In September 1984, at the request of the inhabitants of Soras and neighboring communities harassed by PCP-SL detachments, a military base was installed in the area. This installation followed a series of violent attacks by the PCP-SL, including the Negro Mayo massacre in July 1984 where 30 people were killed, and subsequent assassinations in neighboring communities. The community members bitterly remember that towards the end of 1986, the so-called Captain "Cobra" took command of this base, a man sadly remembered for the series of abuses and outrages committed under his command, mainly cattle rustling. The military base withdrew from Soras in December 1988.
