On August 23, 1984, 49 corpses were discovered buried in graves in Pucayacu, a few kilometers north of the city of Huanta. All the victims were citizens who had been previously detained in the Huanta Stadium by the Marine Infantry. The detainees were transferred in a sort of "caravan of death" to territory belonging to the province of Acobamba, Huancavelica, where they were massacred between August 16 and 19, 1984. This event occurred days after the kidnapping and disappearance of journalist Jaime Ayala Sulca on August 2, and the murder of 6 young evangelicals in Callqui on August 1, 1984.
