On August 24, the Armed Forces Joint Command issued a communiqué suggesting that the bodies found in the Pucayacu grave were those of PCP-SL members killed in confrontations with the Armed Forces. The discovery of this mass grave caused a commotion in political circles and was mentioned along with other reports of disappearances and human rights violations.
