Statement by Carlos Briceño Zevallos on the alliance between the military of Velasco and Shining Path

General EP Carlos Briceño Zevallos, together with the main commanders of the Armed Forces and seconded by a hard-line sector of the ruling party, declared before the public opinion about a peculiar alliance between the retired Velasquist military and the PCP-SL. In reality, Briceño Zevallos was responding to the attacks that, from the weekly Kausachun, were issued against the current military leadership. He pointed out that he had in his possession a document with names of former military personnel implicated in acts of terrorism. These statements were made in a context of growing political and military tension in the country.
