Transfer of detainees to Pucayacu

Members of the Navy transferred fifty detainees from the Municipal Stadium of Huanta to Pucayacu. Days later a mass grave was discovered with fifty unrecognizable corpses, apparently burned with acid.

Around August 16, 1984, members of the Navy, who were stationed in the Municipal Stadium of Huanta, transferred fifty people who were detained there to the town of Pucayacu. On August 22 a mass grave was found in Pucayacu with fifty unrecognizable corpses, as they had apparently been burned with acid. The Joint Command of the Armed Forces issued a communiqué on August 24 suggesting that the bodies found were those of PCP-SL members killed in confrontations with the Armed Forces. The discovery of the mass graves in Pucayacu caused a commotion in political circles and was one of the factors that contributed to the removal of EP General Adrián Huamán Centeno from the political-military leadership of the emergency zone on August 28.
