Chilcayoc community members murdered in Cochayoc

A group of Chilcayoc community members traveling to Lima were killed by the Shining Path in Cochayoc, Belen, in retaliation for having previously killed a wounded Shining Path militant.

On August 13, 1984, a group of community members from Chilcayoc who were on their way to Lima were murdered in Cochayoc, Belen, by members of the Shining Path. The perpetrators apparently came from the community of Belen. This attack was a reprisal by the PCP-SL against the community of Chilcayoc, which had previously killed a wounded Shining Path militant and detained other members of the group when they arrived asking for a healer. The massacre was part of the terror strategy implemented by the Shining Path against communities that showed resistance or opposition to their presence.
