Uninhabited community of Uchuraccay

In August 1984, the community of Uchuraccay was completely uninhabited after months of systematic attacks by the Shining Path PCP, the military and peasant patrols. The surviving community members fled and dispersed to the jungle and the Huanta and Tambo valleys.

By August 1984, after multiple attacks by the Shining Path PCP and the armed forces, the villagers of Uchuraccay had no choice but to completely abandon their community. During the previous months, incursions by the PCP-SL, the Self-Defense Committees and the military arrived indiscriminately, burning houses, stealing belongings and livestock, mistreating and murdering villagers without distinction of age or gender. In April 1984, the Carhuahurán patrols took the church bells and the roof of the school, and in August, several community members, including women, were killed by the army. The survivors fled to the jungle and the valleys of Huanta and Tambo, leaving the community completely uninhabited and dispersed "all over the place".
