In August 1984, the Shining Path PCP assassinated local authorities in several towns in the district of Yanahuanca, Pasco. Shortly thereafter, in July 1984, the province was declared in a state of emergency.
In August 1984, in several villages in the district of Yanahuanca, province of Daniel Alcides Carrion in Pasco, local authorities were assassinated by the Shining Path PCP. This event took place in the context of the PCP-SL's strategy of controlling the countryside by assassinating local authorities and landowners. Previously, in June 1983, the PCP-SL had already executed Alcira Benavides Albeo in the Huarautambo annex of the same district. It was not until July 1984 that the province of Daniel Alcides Carrion was declared an emergency and passed under military control, which caused the Shining Path PCP to withdraw without major confrontations.
