Extrajudicial execution of Jesús Manuel Oropeza Chonta

Peasant leader was extrajudicially executed by Civil Guard patrol, shot, grenaded and burned alive.

On July 28, 1984, at four o'clock in the morning, Jesus Manuel Oropeza Chonta was taken in a green Pick Up truck from Puquio to the Andamarca Military Base by a Civil Guard patrol. The military chief refused to receive him and ordered his execution. On the way back, in Canllapampa, the patrol stopped the vehicle, blindfolded the detainee and drove him to some rocks. Guard Weiner Díaz Chávez shot him in the back, hitting him in the occipital region. Corporal Héctor Campos Yui threw a grenade at him that destroyed his head and trunk, dismembering his right arm, then set him on fire. The body was found on August 10 with multiple fractures to the skull, signs of charring, absence of the right upper limb and absence of skin and soft tissues. The necropsy determined that he was alive when the grenade was thrown at him and he was burned.
