Detention and disappearance of Jesús Manuel Oropeza Chonta

Peasant leader was detained by Civil Guard in Puquio, authorities later denied his detention.

On July 27, 1984, at approximately four o'clock in the afternoon, Jesús Manuel Oropeza Chonta, a 33-year-old peasant leader, Secretary of Peasant Communities of the National Agrarian Confederation and Vice-President of the Agrarian League 'María Parado de Bellido' of Lucanas, was in the main square of Puquio when two members of the Civil Guard told him to go to the police station because Sergeant Julio César Alva Frías wanted to interview him. After the dialogue, the sergeant ordered him to be taken to the jail. Witnesses confirmed that he was detained that night. The next day the authorities denied his detention.
