In July 1984, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso perpetrated a massacre in Pacucro, Huamanguilla district, Huanta province, killing more than 40 people. This event occurred in the context of the intensification of the armed conflict in the area, during one of the most violent years recorded in the provinces of Huanta, Huamanga and La Mar. The attack was part of the Shining Path's strategy to eliminate authorities and the population considered to be opposed to their political-military project. This event took place in the same month in which the PCP-SL also assassinated the mayor of Huamanguilla, the justice of the peace and other people in the area.
