On May 15, 1984, a column of PCP-Sendero Luminoso militants assaulted the town of Pilcas in the province of Andahuaylas. During this attack, the Shining Path killed 35 peasants. This event occurred in a period when the PCP-SL controlled a good part of the rural space of Andahuaylas and was able to organize brutal raids against civilian populations. The assault occurred in the context of intensifying violence in the area, when law enforcement forces had withdrawn several police posts and before the consolidation of organized peasant resistance.
