Confrontation in Erapata

Clash between the Civil Guard and a Shining Path column in Erapata, Vilcabamba, which resulted in the death of a police sergeant and 22 subversives, in addition to the arrest of 25 people.

On April 30, 1984, the Civil Guard clashed with a column of hikers in Erapata, Vilcabamba district, in the department of Cuzco. In the confrontation, a police sergeant and 22 subversives were killed. In addition, the police arrested 10 women and 15 men. This confrontation occurred in the same district where almost two years earlier, on September 27, 1982, there had been an assault on the Erapata police post by the PCP-SL, in which the guard Luis Chávez Ordóñez died. The Erapata area was located along the Apurimac River and would later become part of the self-defense network that reacted against the presence of the PCP-SL.
