Murder of the mayor of Huamanguilla

On April 22, 1984, the PCP-SL hanged the mayor of Huamanguilla, Juan Contreras Marmolejo, along with the justice of the peace in the town's main square. This assassination was part of the Shining Path strategy of eliminating local authorities during the most violent period of the conflict in Ayacucho.

On April 22, 1984, the mayor of the district of Huamanguilla, Juan Contreras Marmolejo, was hanged by the Shining Path in the town's main square. Along with him, the local justice of the peace was murdered. This murder was part of the PCP-SL's strategy of attacking local authorities during 1984, a year in which there was a significant increase in murders against municipal authorities in the provinces of Huanta, Huamanga and La Mar. The years 1983 and 1984 were recorded as the years with the highest number of civilian murders in these provinces, making them one of the most intense scenes of the internal armed conflict in the entire department of Ayacucho.
