The mayor of Tingo Maria, Tito Jaime Fernandez, was assassinated on April 19, 1984 by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. This assassination occurred between two assaults on the town of Aucayacu, where the PCP-SL had attacked the police post with a death toll of twenty. The assassination of the mayor was part of the PCP-SL's strategy to eliminate local authorities in the Huallaga basin. Later, on September 20 of the same year, the mayor of Pumahuasi, from the ranks of the PAP, was also assassinated.
