In accepting the nomination, Ulloas Elías committed himself to hold a polemic with the general secretary of Acción Popular (AP), Javier Alva Orlandini. This announcement took place in the context of the preparations for the 1985 presidential elections, two weeks after Alan Garcia Perez was elected presidential candidate of the PAP in internal elections held on February 12.
