On January 7, 1984, an Army patrol was ambushed by PCP-SL militants in the district of Pampas, province of Tayacaja. The attack resulted in the death of a soldier. This event occurred in the context of the first semester of 1984, when the combined forces of the Army and the police were carrying out operations in the provinces of Tayacaja and Huancavelica to locate and destroy subversive bases. The ambush demonstrated the operational capacity of the PCP-SL in the area despite the military presence.
