The year 1984 was the year with the highest death toll of the entire internal armed conflict. More than 3,000 people died, of which more than 95% were Quechua speakers. This period coincided with the administration of General Adrián Huamán Centeno as Political and Military Chief of Ayacucho and with intense Navy operations in the area.
