Alfonso Barrantes Lingán takes office as mayor of Lima

Alfonso Barrantes Lingán of Izquierda Unida (IU) became mayor of Lima in January 1984, after winning the municipal elections of November 1983. This triumph represented a historic achievement for the Peruvian left.

Alfonso Barrantes Lingán, candidate of Izquierda Unida (IU), became mayor of Lima in January 1984. This was the result of the municipal elections held on November 13, 1983, in which IU won the victory in Lima. Barrantes' inauguration marked an important political milestone, being the first time that the unified left had won the mayoralty of the Peruvian capital. This event took place in a context of economic crisis, political violence and social tensions in the country.
