First departmental strike in Sint Maarten

In 1984, the Comando Unitario de Lucha (CUL), presided over by Lucas Cachay, organized the first departmental strike in San Martin involving workers from the city and the countryside. This mobilization sought to fill the leadership vacuum following the violent strike of 1982.

The Comando Unitario de Lucha (CUL), presided over by Professor Lucas Cachay, promoted the first departmental strike of urban and rural workers in 1984. The CUL was formed in Tarapoto to fill the leadership vacuum evidenced during the 1982 strike in Juan Guerra and Tabalosos, which left 5 dead and more than 20 injured. This departmental strike was a mobilization that involved both urban workers and peasants throughout the department of San Martin. The event was a milestone in social and union organization in the region during the 1980s.
