Throughout 1984, Uchuraccay was repeatedly attacked by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso, the military and the peasant patrols of the surrounding communities. These attacks resulted in numerous deaths and the complete abandonment of the town. The survivors fled to the jungle, Tambo, Huanta, Huamanga and Lima. Not only did the State leave the villagers unprotected at the hands of the subversion, but on several occasions the forces of law and order also became the perpetrators of massacres in co-authorship with the then Civil Defense Committees of neighboring communities, who murdered villagers and looted communal property.
