Approximately 500 community members from the Soras, San Pedro de Larcay and Paico districts, including men and women, organized a counter-offensive against PCP-SL members in the Soras area, reaching as far as Querobamba and Chipao. This action was a response to the Shining Path attacks that had caused more than 100 deaths in the communities of the area, including massacres in Negro Mayo, Chaupihuasi, Doce Corral and Soras. The community members were poorly armed and, according to testimonies, the counter-offensive was not very successful. This organization of the community members took place in a context of growing opposition to the actions of the PCP-SL in the region.
