Formation of the first Angaraes self-defense committees

In 1984, the first peasant self-defense committees were formed in the communities of Cuticsa, Yuraccocha, Anchahuay, Julcamarca, Secclla and Atunakihuay in the province of Angaraes, Huancavelica, as an organized response to the violence of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso.

In 1984, the first organized peasant resistance efforts were registered through self-defense committees in the province of Angaraes, department of Huancavelica. These organizations emerged mainly in the communities of Cuticsa, Yuraccocha, Anchahuay, Julcamarca, Secclla and Atunakihuay in response to the violence unleashed by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. The formation of these committees represented the beginning of organized peasant resistance in the area, which would later be consolidated with the support of the Armed Forces. This process occurred in a context where 1984 was the year of greatest violence in the provinces of Acobamba and Angaraes.
