In 1984, Chincheros, which was a district of Andahuaylas, became a province incorporating the districts of Huaccana, Ongoy, Ocobamba, Chincheros, Cocharcas, Uranmarca and Anco Huallo. This new province was established in a context of intense peasant mobilization and internal armed conflict. During the 1970s, Andahuaylas was a major focus of peasant mobilization, basically due to peasant discontent with the implementation of the Agrarian Reform. The creation of the province of Chincheros implied a territorial administrative reorganization in the midst of the period of political violence affecting the region.
