In 1984, the PCP-SL took the town of Aucayacu twice, attacking the police post with a death toll of twenty. These actions were part of the PCP-SL's territorial control strategy in the Huallaga basin. Between one assault and another, the mayor of Tingo Maria, Tito Jaime Fernandez, was assassinated on April 19. Actions such as the murder of ten homosexuals and prostitutes in Aucayacu contributed to their prestige among coca growers.
