Murder of 7 community members and a businessman in Santa Carmen

On December 9, 1983, members of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso, posing as police officers, tortured and murdered seven community members and a Talavera businessman in Santa Carmen, Ayacucho.

On December 9, 1983, a group of hikers arrived in the community of Santa Carmen pretending to be police officers. Once there, they tortured and killed 7 local community members and a businessman from Talavera, Andahuaylas. This event occurred in the context of the expansion of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the Oreja de Perro area and their attempts to control the communities through terror. Santa Carmen was one of the communities where the first peasant patrols had been organized in mid-January 1983.
