1983 Municipal Elections
The November 1983 municipal elections were not held in any of the districts of Huanta or in the ten districts of Huamanga due to the fear and insecurity generated by the violence of the internal armed conflict. The mandate of the authorities elected in 1980 was extended.
In November 1983, due to the impact of the war and the fear generated by subversive actions and counter-subversive operations, no municipal elections were held in any of the districts of Huanta, not even in the provincial capital. Nor were they held in the ten districts of the neighboring province of Huamanga. In the provinces of Huanta and La Mar, the mandate of the local government elected in 1980 was extended. The suspension of the elections was evidence of the climate of insecurity and fear that prevailed in the population due to the internal armed conflict.
