The PCP-Sendero Luminoso assassinated five community authorities in Cayramayo, Santillana, Huanta, in September 1983. This was part of the Shining Path's strategy of eliminating traditional authorities to impose their "new power" in the peasant communities.

In September 1983, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso assassinated five community authorities in the town of Cayramayo, Santillana district, Huanta province. This was part of the Shining Path's strategy of eliminating traditional authorities and any form of organization existing in the peasant communities. The assassination of local authorities was part of the PCP-SL's tactic of "liberating the countryside" through threats, dismissals and executions of community leaders. This event is part of the context of the intensification of violence in the area during 1983, a year in which one of the highest number of civilian assassinations was registered in the provinces of Huanta, Huamanga and La Mar.
